SAVE THE PLEATS

Founded in 1925, Specialty pleaters was one of a dozen pleating business in Marvelous Melbourne but sadly now it is the last remaining one.

Melbourne design duo, William Bon and Penelope Gibbs have created an exclusive collection of scarves, pocket squares and artwork to help raise funds for Specialty Pleaters, Melbournes' last artisan pleater. Titled 1930's Holiday as an homage to the early beginnings of Specialty Pleaters, these luxurious silk scarves feature hand drawn artwork under the themes of Ripponlea, Kalista and 1930's fashion. Illustrated in Hokum's signature style with drawings by Penelope the pieces have been pleated in a small accordion pleat giving them a beautiful sculptural appeal with an elegant textural finish.

Founded in 1925, Specialty pleaters was one of a dozen pleating business in Marvelous Melbourne but sadly now it is the last remaining one.

Currently its resident artisan pleater and owner, Simon Zdraveski, continues to pleat fabric for the likes of Toni Maticevski, the Victorian Opera as well as other established designers, but unfortunately the pool of new designers is diminishing due to lack of industry support and education.

Money raised from this campaign will go to the following elements:

  1. Updating equipment and new moulds, some of which date back to 1930's and require restoration.
  2. Establishing training courses that will be open to public to help transfer the craft of pleating to the wider community.
  3. Updating Specialty Pleaters website to implement a custom digital pattern download and booking service.
  4. Development of educational resources and setting up apprenticeships to ensure the longevity of this important fashion craft.

Rich in Melbourne Heritage

Fashion pleating is a rich part of Melbourne's cultural and textiles heritage. This artisan craft is now a rare trade right throughout the world due to changing times and a lack of awareness. Penelope and William hoping that this campaign will give Simon and Specialty Pleaters the much needed support to continue its artisan fashion service for years to come.
